Apple Bravo of Esmolfe PDO

Apple Bravo of Esmolfe PDO

The Apple Bravo of Esmolfe, known since the 18th century and originally from the village of Esmolfe in Penalva do Castelo, is an exclusively Portuguese treasure.

Originating around 200 years ago from a tree sprouted from seed, the Bravo de Esmolfe apple has achieved the distinction of PDO - Protected Designation of Origin due to its unique characteristics. With a medium to small size, an oblong-conical shape and a whitish skin with reddish spots, it stands out for its intense aroma and juicy, sweet flesh with a high quality taste.

Grown at altitudes of between 350 and 550 meters, the Bravo de Esmolfe apple adapts to the local climate with its late flowering, avoiding the risk of frost. It comes into production gradually and the harvest begins in the second half of September.

It is an exceptional option for consumption between meals or as a dessert, especially when accompanied by a slice of delicious Serra da Estrela cheese, representing not just a fruit, but an authentic expression of the agricultural and cultural richness of the Dão region and the Portuguese territory.

Curiosities

The “health-friendly” apple

The Apple Bravo of Esmolfe PDO has been recognized by the scientific community for its health benefits. A collaborative study between the Institute of Experimental and Technological Biology, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon and the Egas Moniz University Institute identified various flavonoids, such as catechin, epicatechin and procyanidin, present in this apple. These compounds have been shown to have positive effects in controlling various pathways of cancer development, pointing to a potential reduction in the risk of breast, stomach and lung cancer, as well as reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Small in size and big on flavor

The Apple Bravo de Esmolfe stands out for one distinctive feature: its modest size. The smaller it is, the juicier it is. Although it is small compared to other varieties, the greatness of this apple lies in the surprising taste it offers.

Late harvest

One of the peculiar characteristics of this apple variety is its late harvest due to its late flowering, which is also in line with the climate in the region where it is grown.
